New Name term/Fields

To add a new Name term select New from the menu, then the appropriate record type from the dialogue box and enter the term.

There is no difference between Person, Corporate, Family and People terms in the processes of entering data, only a slight difference in the fields available.

Here are examples of blank Name records: Person, Corporate, Family and People, place your mouse over (hover over) a blue question mark next to a field to view popup text containing more information on that field. See the Complete Field List in the Calm section for further details.  Please note that the example records will open a new window, when you have finished and wish to return to this page, use the cross in the top right corner to close the window.

Name records are validated by Calm; you will receive an error message if you try to save a Name record with more than one Epithet, PreTitle, FamilyName, Dates, Forenames or Surname field, if the One-per-record validation option is set in the Record drop-down menu. If you do have more than one of these fields in an existing record, you will be warned every time you edit the record.

The Names Tree

You may wish to make use of the tree function to create hierarchies of name records, for example to represent family trees or corporate histories.

The name database contains a Tree field called Set. The Set field enables you to link name records together in a hierarchical structure if required. For example a Family record about the Smith Family might be linked to a person record about John Smith.

The separator used in the Set field in the names database is a forward slash or oblique (/). The names tree is viewed by clicking on the Set button (next to the field) in the name record or by clicking Tree followed by Set (or the label name if you have changed this for the Set field) in the side button strip.
You may add child and sibling records into a names tree hierarchy, and work with the names tree using the usual Tree Menu functions.

Linked Data

The linked data feature enables you to add data from external sources into fields on your Calm records. By default, the following data sources are available in Calm: AIM25, British Library and Wikipedia. The External Linked Data page explains how to link the data to your Calm Name records.
