Contents of box marked 'Popular Imagery & Advertising' Popular images & advertising (postcards, illustrations, photographs)which may have been shown in the exhibition or used in organisation/preparation of it. 1953 Note: a section of the exhibition consisted of montages of Popular images & Advertising, designed by Lee Miller. It was not itemised in the catalogue (but see Installation photos in other Item). It is not known if all the material in this Item relates to this section, and some was probably just collected in preparation but not used. It was found mixed with the other Wonder and Horror material. Numbers follow from other Items. 83. Photographs of Shell adverts (9)- 7 with reversible heads designed by Rex Whistler 84. Various images from adverts & periodicals, cut out and pasted to 7 sheets of paper(glue stained & torn). One image has been removed from a sheet and is now filed with RPA 400/80. 85. Popular French romantic postcards for lovers (9) (found in groups of 6 & 2 in box & folder). Feature small heads. 86. Popular French postcards, with various heads on them (5). Probably date from c.1905, and 1920s. Some have messages with no apparent link to Roland Penrose. 87. Postcard reproduction of painting by J.J.Henner of woman's head (W & H box & file,SB & SO) 89. ICA Director's compliments slip, inscribed on verso: Robert Melville has taken photo of 159. (note:Melville one of organisers)
