| Admin_History | The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art was founded in 1959 and opened at Inverleith House, in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh in 1960. In 1984 the Gallery moved to the former John Watson Institution, a building designed by William Burn in the 1820s, to the west of Edinburgh's City Centre, on Belford Road. In 1999 the Gallery extended to the adjacent Dean Orphan Hospital designed by Thomas Hamilton in the 1830. Named the Dean Gallery, this building has houses the Paolozzi Gift and part of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art's permanent collection, the Gallery's Archive and Special Books Collections and its Reference Library. |
