Admin Menu
The Admin menu in the Admin program contains features which are designed to be used by the Administrator of your Calm network, therefore these features are only available on a client/server configuration.
Broadcast message
The Broadcast message facility allows the Administrator to send a message to all users currently logged into Calm. This may be used, for example, if the Administrator needs to shut down the Calm service and wants to ask every client user to log out of Calm.
When you choose the Broadcast message option the following dialogue box is displayed:
- Type your message in the text box provided
- Click the OK button to send the message, it will appear in the middle of the screen on all client PCs currently logged into Calm, an example is shown below:
In order to use this option any client PCs will need to have the Windows Messaging service activated. This is a standard service supplied with Windows 2000 and above. Older Windows 98 PCs will need to run the WinPopUp tool which is also supplied as part of Windows.
Lock Application
The Lock Application option allows the Administrator to lock the Calm application to prevent anyone who is NOT already logged into Calm from logging in. We recommend that you use all best endeavours to ensure that all staff have exited Calm before locking the application. When activated, this option stops anyone using Calm while the lock is on. The actual lock is placed on the DScribe Service and is removed either when the Administrator closes the Admin programme or in exceptional cases by stopping/starting the Service if there is a problem. If a user is logged in to Calm at the time of the application lock then they will continue to see Calm as an open application but it is likely that Calm will stop responding. It is not possible to state when this would happen or how it might manifest itself, that is largely down to what they are doing in Calm at that time.
This feature is likely to be used in conjunction with the Broadcast message option described above, to prevent more users logging into Calm when you are about to broadcast a message and stop the service.
